SEPTEMBER 21, 2023

Gentlemen,

We care about you and encourage you to take care of yourself. Sometimes you put yourself on the back-burner and put everyone else first.  Below are some small self-care ideas that we highly recommend because you are important and we appreciate you.

Skincare.

- Seasonal Facials. Reserving at least four Facials a year, helps you keep up on your skin's success!  Climate has a tremendous effect on your Skin and for this reason, facials are custom to your skin type and climate.  For instance, Winter is drying, so your skin may crave hydration.  Summer is hot, oils may build up and clog pores, others need hydration as they are in the sun.  Spring is in need of deep cleansing and hydration due forced heat and indoor activity from the Winter.  Fall is in need of shedding dead skin cells from enjoying Summer days on the beach, boat or by the lake!  Deep exfoliation followed by hydration is your best bet!

- Start a daily routine and keep it simple. Two products that will keep your skin clean and refreshed are a Cleanser and Moisturizer. The Cleanser will strip excess dirt and oil from the skin while the Moisturizer will reintroduce moisture back in the skin. Additional Products to look into to step up your skincare game, are a Toner as a second step to remove deep penetrated dirt on the skin, Facial Scrub to remove any dry skin, Mask based off of your skin type, and Serum to rejuvenate the skin.  Yes  Gentlemen, it's ok to use products to preserve your handsome face!

-  Use Sunscreen to protect your skin all year round. One Brand we love is Badger. They are known for their Organic Mineral based Sunscreen. It is NOT loaded with chemicals and additives! It protects your skin from harmful sun rays without being absorbed into your skin.  Most mass produced sunscreens are loaded with chemicals and get absorbed into your body and barely protect your skin. Badger sits on top of your skin giving the most protection without penetrating your skin!

Hair/Scalp Care.

- Biweekly or Monthly Haircuts. By doing this it keeps your Hair refreshed and tidy, along with a great relaxing experience. We also recommend getting Clean ups in between for when you don't quite need a cut, but just a little shape up!

- Get Scalp Treatments every few months. This is a "Facial for your Scalp & Hair."  This amazing service is extremely relaxing.   The process begins with a scalp cleanse and exfoliation followed by a scalp massage.  A scalp masque is applied and then activated by aromatherapy infused hot towels wrapped around your head.  At this point you may doze off while the tea tree products and hot towels gently perform healing therapy to your scalp, hair and mind.

- Use Product. We advise Gentlemen all the time, when you add a little product to your hair, it's just the cherry on top!  Product keeps your style sharp and completes the look! Just remember, not all products are the same, some are heavy and some are light.  Each product is for different hair types and styles.  If you are the Gentleman that prefers next to nothing on their hair, well, no worries,  we have a product for you.  Discuss your product thoughts or concerns with the Stylist or Barber at The Fine Men's Salon of Westchester, they are amazing listeners and will ensure your happiness!

Mental-care.

The everyday hustle and bustle can be overwhelming. From commuting to the city by train or car, to running to kids activities, to the everyday life pressures; we encourage our Gentlemen to take some extra time for themselves.  Our salon is unique where the experience is meant to be relaxing, calm and friendly.  This time is your time!  We encourage you to come in a few minutes earlier than your reservation time so that you can decompress.  Sit, listen to music or watch a Sport on TV and enjoy a freshly brewed American or Espresso Coffee, Chilled Beverage, Beer on Tap or Spirit!  Inquire at the Front Desk if we can change your "Haircut"  to the "Gentleman Haircut,"  where a massage with our TherapyGun relieves tension in your neck and shoulders.

Other ideas before/after your Grooming Service:

- Go for a walk on Mamaroneck Ave! Not only does the Avenue have amazing Businesses but it is also gorgeous at Sunset!  Take a stroll alone or with a loved one down to the Harbour where you instantly decompress!  Sit and have a Coffee or Beverage on one of the Benches by the Water :)

- Treat yourself to a Classic Face Shave or Head Shave at The Fine Men's Salon of Westchester.   Let yourself experience a straight edge shave by a professional where you will be guaranteed a great day!  The 4 step process will relax you and have you fall asleep. You will wake up refreshed and your Face and/or Scalp feeling baby soft!  Gentlemen, you deserve to be pampered!

- Go out to eat! Pick your favorite restaurant, or ask us here at the Salon for a recommendation of our local restaurants, we would be happy to make a reservation for you! We love to make sure that our Clients are treated well!

When you Look Good, You Feel Good.

What made you want to become an Author?

I've always been creatively driven. I remember writing these short ghost stories when I was around 14 years old (20 years ago now!) This was right after I first watched The Shining and I thought it could be fun to "tell stories like Stephen King". In 2019 I finished my first novel. It was one of those moments of realization that being an author was an attainable thing and I said "I can actually do this...I'm going to do this." I haven't turned back since.

Who is your most influential Author and why?

Stephen King, easily, but there are so many writers whose work I owe credit to for their inspiration. Neil Gaiman is another. Along with so many modern authors: Thomas Olde Heuvelt, Clay Chapman, Gabino Iglesias, Catriona Ward, Chuck Wendig and Paul Tremblay to name a few.

Where were you educated?

I graduated from New York Tech's Communication Arts program. My focus was film production and editing.

You wrote a book, tell us about it and was the inspiration?

The Triangle Forest is my second novel. It's a cosmic horror story about a fictional corporation trying to pass off an alien substance found in the woods as a "new technology". It was fun to write drastically different characters with strong opinions as they navigate the strange terrain in this world.

The idea for this book spawned from a real moment in my life when my car got stuck in the snow somewhere in the Pocono mountains. There is a scene in the book which exhibits the anxiety of getting lost in the woods - it leads to a slightly different outcome than the one I had (thankfully).

How long did it take you to write your book?

It took me four years to write and edit The Triangle Forest. It went through a lot of changes along the way but I'm extremely happy with the way this one turned out.

Do you have a favorite book and why?

It's tough to choose just one. I could say either The Stand or The Dead Zone by Stephen King and be satisfied. I always think about 2001: A Space Odyssey when faced with this question, too. This is the book that made me realize how infinitely massive the universe is and for sparking my imagination in the first place.

What is your personal life story? Was anyone a big influence on you to become an Author?

I went to school for film & cinematography and spent a few years playing guitar for a local NY/NJ metal band. I think that time in my life during college served as the foundation for me becoming an author. I love the creative process and that you can tell a story using different mediums. I believe crafting a well-balanced novel has a lot of similarities to writing a rock or metal album. There are certain beats you want to hit at certain times that make the story you're telling flow. Both have highs and lows. Momentum is important to keep the reader/listener engaged in the story you want to tell. Outside of Stephen King there are figures such as Anthony Bourdain and Chris Cornell who were storytellers in their own right who I looked up to and hope to tell a story as intriguing as them.

Where can we buy your book?

The Triangle Forest is available on Amazon and through Barnes and Noble online. It is also available in audiobook format through Audible. Full details, including in-person events are included on my website gravesendbooks.com

Are you working on a future book?

I'm working on several! I'm about 150 pages into another novel which has more of a classic horror vibe. I'm going for something that feels like Salem's Lot meets A24's The Witch. I still have a way to go, but I'm having a lot of fun writing it. There is also a sequel to The Triangle Forest in the works. Finally, I have two shorter novellas in the works. I'm focusing on having fun and going where the momentum is right now.

What's your favorite part of visiting The Fine Men's salon of Westchester?

Aside from the best haircuts in the area, everyone is super friendly and welcoming. The team at Fine Men's Salon has done a great job of creating a relaxing space.

May 2023

How and when did you get started with tennis?

I started playing tennis at the age of six at New Rochelle Racquet Club, where I now teach!  I got interested in the sport because my older brother was playing so I thought it looked like it would be fun to try.  Little did I know at the time that it would become such a major part of my life.

What has Tennis taught you for your everyday life?

This is a great question.  I think tennis is a great metaphor for life because there is constant chaos going on during a tennis match.  You have to remain calm and figure out the best way to move forward during each point.  At the end of the day you have to focus on the things you are able to control and keep a positive attitude.

Is Tennis your Favorite Sport or just something you're naturally good at?

Tennis is definitely my favorite sport to play but I will always have a deep love for baseball.  I loved playing baseball as much as any sport growing up but I chose to focus on tennis as I grew older because I was more talented at it.  I definitely think I made the right choice because of what I've been able to accomplish in my tennis career, but I can't help to reminisce about the great memories I had on the baseball field and I take any chance I can get to watch the Yankees play.

Who is your favorite professional tennis player?

Roger Federer will always be my favorite professional tennis player.  It was very hard to hear he was retiring due to injuries last year, but he has given me and so many fans a lifetime of amazing tennis moments.  In my opinion, Roger is the epitome of class both on and off the court and his game looked so effortless even as he was beating the best players in the world consistently.  He also remained so calm under pressure, which is one of the hardest parts of the game.

What do you like most about teaching people?

My favorite part about teaching people is making a connection with them.  To be a good coach you have to gain the trust of your student, otherwise your words don't have much meaning.  I'm always invested in my students beyond just on the tennis court so I like to learn about their lives and share with them things about myself.  If a student feels like I truly care about them they are also more willing to push themselves because they feel like they have a partner going through the training process with them and not just someone shouting directions.

How do you handle the student that doesn’t want to practice?

It's definitely a tough part of the job when you're with someone who doesn't want to be there.  I try to be as empathetic as I can when dealing with a student who doesn't feel like playing or trying hard in practice.  It's very important for me to take that student aside and try to figure out what the issue is because getting angry with them will almost always worsen the problem.  Sometimes I'm able to find things to practice that are more fun to do so the student is still able to get something out of their session.

Your favorite tennis racket?

I've always been a big fan of Wilson racquets because that was Federer's brand of choice.  Federer played with the Pro Staff but I actually prefer the Blade, which was Serena Williams's racquet of choice.  It's a great racquet for power and feels very well balanced when hitting.

Best tennis tip to a beginner?

Tennis is a pretty challenging sport so it's important for a beginner to understand that it will take time before they can go out and play a match.  Taking time to understand the fundamentals will pay off so much in the end because I see so many players who have played for years but never took lessons when they first started and they have so many bad habits.  Trust your coach and enjoy the challenge!

One tennis fact about yourself people may not know?

During my senior year of high school I went undefeated in singles and helped my team reach sectionals where I lost in a tiebreaker to a much higher ranked player because he cheated!  It was a hard pill to swallow in the moment, but it did teach me a great lesson because I saw how proud my coach was of me and it showed me that the outcome of a game isn't everything; character and effort go above anything else.

Where are you located and how can people book a session with you?

I live in New Rochelle and during the fall and winter months I work exclusively at New Rochelle Racquet club so you can check out their website: https://pinebrookfitness.com/new-rochelle-racquet-club/our-team/ or give them a call to set up a lesson.  During the spring and summer I have some availability to meet outdoors around Westchester so feel free to send me an email or give me a call!

“Amazing place to get a haircut! Fantastic people and fantastic cuts. The service is unmatched anywhere else. Always makes my day!” - Xavier, 5 Star Facebook Review

“I've been coming to the salon for almost two years now.  Every time I come I look forward to the friendly environment and of course a great haircut.  Diego has been my main stylist, but have been with a few others as well and would highly recommend all of them.  Wouldn't consider anywhere else to get my hair cut.” - Dan, 5 Star Yelp Review

“My boyfriend had been going to the same barber for YEARS but after a while he wanted to change up his buzz cut look and his normal barber did not know how to make his hair the way he wanted it, so I just so happened to suggest this salon to him because I live down the street and after our first visit he refuses to go anywhere else. The stylists at this salon are so attentive and really want to please you. They listened to everything we had to say and the finished haircut exceeded our expectations. Definitely would recommend!!!!!!!!” - Cierra, 5 Star Yelp Review

4) Get EXTRA CASH For Referring Another Stylist

We’re always trying to expand our team with talented barbers and stylist. One of our incentives is a referral commission for any of our stylists who refer a friend or colleague to work for us. It’s an easy way to make some extra money, and who doesn’t want to help out a friend take on their new dream job?

Above all else, we want to stay true to our origins as a family-run, independent business. At The Fine Men’s Salon, we care about our staff, stylists and clientele like they’re our family. This is a place where you can work safely and creatively while continuing to do what you love!
